Natural Remedies for Personal Lubricant
Vaginal dryness can be a common problem for women on birth control, those suffering from a yeast infection or those who have recently given birth. Home remedies and natural personal lubricants are safe to apply to the vaginal area for relief from dryness, but some should not be used during sex. Non-oil based lubricants are safe to use during sex or with contraception.
Oils
Coconut oil, available at health stores and also used for cooking, can be used as a personal lubricant. Coconut oil has antiviral and antibacterial properties, which can be beneficial to the vaginal area.
Household olive oil can also be used as a personal lubricant. Both oils can be applied with fingers to genital area.
Oils are good home remedies for personal lubrication, but should not be used with latex or other birth-control methods.
Petroleum Jelly
Petroleum jelly is a semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbon that was originally promoted as a topical ointment with healing benefits. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved petroleum jelly as an over-the-counter skin protectant and it is widely used in skin care.
Petroleum jelly can be used as a personal lubricant remedy for vaginal dryness. However, since it is oil-based, it interferes with the structure of latex. Petroleum jelly should not be used with latex condoms as it can deteriorate them, or cause ruptures.
Homemade lubricant
Mix 1 cup (8 oz.) water and 4 tsp. of corn starch in a sauce pan, and slowly bring to a boil. Stir well so there is no corn starch stuck to the pan, and keep stirring often. Your homemade mixture will resemble gelatin once heated. Cool your mixture at room temperature but do not use the refrigerator as it will become too hard. You can place your homemade personal lubricant in a plastic container with a lid.
This cornstarch-based personal lubricant is safe to use with latex condoms.
